Hämeenlinna, Fi

Hämeenlinna is in the "heart of southern Finland" and is home to the medieval Häme Castle, built in the late 13th century. Along with Helsinki, the first railway line opened in Hämeenlinna and the railway station that still stands there today was built in 1921.Pictures don't really explain what it was like being in the castle. It was never ending... room after room with strange passageways between each, lots of secret staircases, layers of bricks and stones that were obviously all from different time periods. As cheesy as it sounds (and as annoying as this word is to all architecture students), this is palimpsest at its best. The Verkatehdas Cultural Center, designed by JKMM Architects, completed in 2007, was the venue where we saw pianist Grigory Sokolov. The concert was phenomenal and the building is equally impressive. Two of my favorite materials are brick and Corten steel and the combination was successful, in my opinion. Typical for architecture students, we snooped around the building a couple hours before the show started to see every nook. Look at my web albums for lots more photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/jeadsit84
(My Dad recently looked at my photos and remarked that I "sure do click away"... but luckily for me, digital cameras are still the same price no matter how many times you click the take picture button!! Sorry for all the photos if there are too many to look through, but one day I will be glad I have 100,000 pictures from Finland.)

Vaclav reminded me that a good building is only as good as its bathroom, so we had to check those out too! Then, after a long day, we got back to Helsinki and had a few drinks for my birthday :)
