At the center of Beijing is the
Forbidden City, called "forbidden" because while the emperor's family inhabited the palace, no one was allowed to enter or exit without his permission. It is enormous, by the way. (See map below.) I read in my handy Beijing Lonely Planet that it takes
10 years to restore the Palace, so when they finish the 10 years of restoring, it's already time to start again! They are CONSTANTLY restoring it, which is obvious when visiting because it is in good condition and the detail is beautiful. We spent several hours here and didn't see everything.
It is literally the center of the city and protected view corridors maintain a north-south axis through the city and through the Forbidden City.
My favorite picture of the boys: James, TJ, Willie, Andy, Nick. . . loved spending time with them in Beijing, getting to know them better, and realizing we have a kick ass time together!!
