JOURNEY
While Jordan and I both took planes to Stockholm, the trip back to Helsinki was by boat - a big boat. The Viking m/s Mariella delivered in 1985 was our home on the overnight voyage across the Baltic. The ride was generally smooth although our cabin did seem to be close to a mechanical or engine space. We enjoyed duty free shopping (and booze) and had a delicious breakfast as we woke up to the fog and open sea. On our arrival that morning we encountered sea ice about 2-3 hours from Helsinki. It was a bit surreal as the boat quietly sliced through the massive pieces of ice. The patterns and views of the ice were often quite beautiful and I implored Jordan to brave the icy deck with me to see the shattered surface of the sea up close. All this for the second week in March when, presumably, the ice should be clearing and receding. For all its presence, we arrived in snowy Helsinki without incident.
