primary images of architecture

we have had all but one lecture for our primary images of architecture seminar class. the primary images, according to jouni, are floor, roof/ceiling (in finnish they only have one word for both), window, door, wall, hearth, table & chair, bed, and bath. a couple of my favorite quotes from jouni's lectures are:

"I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society. "
Henry David Thoreau

"Now when I was a boy
My daddy sat me on his knee
And he told me
He told me many things
And he said son
There's a lot of things in this world
You're gonna have no use for
And when you get blue
And you've lost all your dreams
There's nothin' like a campfire
And a can of beans"

Tom Waits (who doesn't love TW?)

sometimes when we had these lectures i was so memorized by the power of these "architectural images" (which translate, for me, into how each of these components of the built environment shape our lives... or maybe how our lives shape these things) especially when jouni left the final slide on one of these powerful quotations or poems.
previous to each lecture, we each did drawings of what we thought of as "floor" or "wall", etc. and it was really interesting to see the different perspectives on what each of those things mean and how they play a significant role on our lives, sometimes without us even knowing it.
